Greenwood child molester facing up to a life sentence after no-show for trial date

NATHANIEL A. HOLLOWAY

UPDATE: Greenwood sex offender captured in Florida

Greenwood, S.C.; May 24, 2022 – The Greenwood man who was convicted at trial in his absence after absconding the day of jury selection for his trial was captured Monday morning after less than a week on the run, 8th Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Wednesday.

Nathaniel Holloway was apprehended Monday afternoon at a hotel in Daytona Beach, Fla. by the State Law Enforcement Division Fugitive Team with assistance from state and local law enforcement agencies in Florida.  Holloway will be brought back this week and detained in Greenwood until he is brought before a judge for sentencing during the next term of General Sessions court.  He is facing a minimum of 25 years in prison and could face up to a life sentence in the South Carolina prison system.

Solicitor Stumbo credited the relentless work of SLED, particularly Special Agent Michael Sloan, for the swift capture of Holloway.

“Without the professional expertise and persistence of Special Agent Sloan, this dangerous sex offender would still be at large and a threat to our citizens,” Solicitor Stumbo said. “We are glad that Holloway will be brought before the court as soon as possible and this child survivor can finally see justice executed on the man who so horrifically abused her.”

Greenwood, S.C.; May 17, 2022 – A Greenwood man who cut off his GPS ankle monitor and absconded from his trial faces a sentence of 25 years to life in prison after being convicted in his absence Tuesday at the Greenwood County Courthouse, 8th Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Tuesday afternoon.

Nathaniel Holloway, 42, of Greenwood, was found guilty by a Greenwood County jury Tuesday afternoon of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor following a two-day trial. When Holloway did not show up for his trial Monday morning, law enforcement was dispatched to his residence. Officers found Holloway’s ankle monitor, which had been cut off, at the residence, but Holloway had fled.

Circuit Judge Donald B. Hocker issued a sentence after the trial, but the sentencing order will remain sealed until Holloway is apprehended on the Court’s bench warrant and he can be brought before the court to have the sentence read in open court.  The crime caries a mandatory minimum of 25 years up to life in prison under South Carolina law.

The conviction stems from the child victim’s 2021 disclosure about a sexual assault incident that occurred in the summer of 2017, when she was 9 years old.  The victim stated that Holloway had been drinking alcohol when he assaulted her.

Senior Assistant Solicitor Elizabeth Taylor and Assistant Solicitor Caroline Avant prosecuted the case for the Solicitor’s Office, with critical trial support assistance from 8th Circuit Investigator Windy Chappell and Victim Advocate Rhetta Smith. Holloway was represented by Dick Warder of the Greenville County Bar.

Solicitor Stumbo praised the work of his prosecution team and the Greenwood Police Department, including lead investigator Benji Baker, in securing the conviction.  The Solicitor also implored the community to come forward with any information that could lead to Holloway’s arrest.

“Nathaniel Holloway is a danger to this community and we will spare no available resource in the law enforcement community to bring him to justice quickly,” Solicitor Stumbo said following the trial. “I am pleased that this young ‘survivor’ has gotten the justice she deserves, and we look forward to seeing Nathaniel Holloway behind bars very soon.”
